Summer Shows

Hi All! Just an update on some of the shows I’m showing work in this summer. I was recently in the 32nd Annual Photo Regional at the Atrium; taking home 3rd place! Which I can’t believe because the show was FULL of amazing work. Thanks to Fulton Street Gallery, Carrie Haddad, and all the artists for making it a great show. The show is still up till June 5th.

June 5th, 5-9PM will be the opening reception for the show, Tomorrow’s Masters Today. This show is at the Albany Insitutue of Art and History and part of its Gala on the 11th. It looks like a great show…with a ton of great work…from great artists. One of my limited edition stump prints got in…I’m ecstatic to be included and I hope it sells at the silent auction; raising some money for the Institute. A bunch of recent MFA grads and a few of my classmates are in as well. Congrats to them and the rest of the artists!

The June Troy Night Out (June 25th) will be the opening reception of the Fence Show at the Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy. I usually enter this every year, not only as a way of showing new work, but to make sure my membership is up to date.:-) This is an opportunity for me to try out new work on a large audience every year…it’s an extremely important show/resource to this area and I encourage any and all folks to enter. It’s always fun, and with Ian Berry from the Tang as curator this year…I can’t wait to see the Fence Select Show in July (and see if I can make the cut.;-) Submit your work at the Arts Center June 13th-15th.

The Motion Portrait Project gets some hot Phantom HD action.

So last weekend I was in NYC with friends trying to add more to the motion portrait project. Thanks a million to all that helped out and came out. To those who couldn’t make it…we’ll be doing it again…so no excuses.;-)

Here are two “studies” of David Kalka and Travis Anderberg. Both did “straight” portraits…then something very different. I like them presented like this…it gives me lots of ideas.:-)

This new group marks another chapter in the projects’ ongoing history. Sean and I still have more ideas and different variations on the subject…we plan to explore those different aspects in the future. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please feel free to send them my way. Also look for the self motion portrait film to be out soon. (This is also an ongoing/never to be truly finished piece.)

FIRE!!! Part 1

Fire! is the tentative title of this next group of videos and 2D work. The idea comes mostly from quantum physics and Black holes. (In fact this first group is titled “Black Hole 1″)

The idea came to me after reading about the theoretical scenario of falling into a black hole. The person falling would perceive time as a linear, real-time flow. The observer would, theoretically, see the person stop at the event horizon…stuck forever. The person would supposedly also become “red-er” in color as the high wavelengths of light never make it to the observers eye. It is my belief that at this moment, time follows almost no rules. The falling person sees time as a real-time, linear flow, where as the observer sees a single second dragged out over a lifetime. I think the next “final frontier” is the understanding of time…which may ever happen.

Exhibition Notes:
The split screen is made to play on opposite walls of a gallery one on each. The other piece loops as such on a flat screen TV placed on the far middle wall. The sound from the middle wall piece is what happens when you take the X-Ray data from a black hole and put it through certain processes…especially the sound of a black hole. NASA recently found that black holes do emanate a sound…they usually hum at a B flat, but 57 octaves below middle C. In other words…you can’t hear it.

The Motion Portrait Part 2: The Show

I first want to start by saying THANK YOU!…to all that came and made the show a success. I’d also like to thank Heron, Sierra, Luna, and Ben for the help with set up and take down. Once people came out of their shell a little…and Restys provided the soundtrack…we got some great portraits. In fact…more than 100 portraits were taken.

I’m attaching some of the better show pics from both nights, along with the film. The film itself has turned into a bit of a Restys music video…which I think works great…what do you think?

Thank you to all those who participated in giving me ideas to finish the self motion portrait. That should be finished in a few months. If you have any suggestions just email them to me asap! Please feel free to share the site, film, and make suggestions!

Maine International Film Festival; Nostalgia

I recently sent a few films out to festivals to give them a second chance. Motion Portrait Film was one of them. As you can see from another post…it’s very much still alive in everything I do as I head into graduate school. BUT, this was different. I got accepted to a film festival. It’s played at several gallery openings; small venues of people, often half of the crowd was made up of half the participants, BUT now it’s “international”. Now it has a chance for a larger audience. The Maine International Film Festival takes place in July of every year and has a great selection of films and guests. (Hell, my favorite directors, Terrence Malick came there a while back…if only to have been there in the early 2000′s) I can’t fucking wait. Half of it has to do with the location. I love Maine…half of the film was shot there. It holds some of the fondest memories, with some of the best people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. I miss it…in my soul I often miss the place. I was a kid who grew up on Stephen King novels and bi-annual trips to Maine…it’s a part of my blood. I tend to want a lot out of life, but for all the places I want to travel in my life, it’s always on top of my places to end up if things need fixing, or if life has calmed. I want to finish a long career of film making and image making there. Okay…you get the point.:-) But there’s something you don’t know…

I made another film in Maine. It was also the last time I experienced something paranormal. Since then I seem to have adopted an attitude of logic. (not a crack on people who believe…I promise.) The house we lived in was full of spooky rooms; the sounds of footsteps, creaking, and breathing. One evening I woke up to see what looked like an older woman watching me sleep. Needless to say I was terrified and as I kicked at the empty air while rubbing my eyes, she diappeared. I haven’t experienced anything like that since, and I wonder if it was just the stress of leaving school, moving to Maine, and the built up Stephen King like feeling to New England. I soon after came up with the idea for Fog. The film is about regret, friendship, and finding your place in the world. The Radiohead song makes it a tough film to get out into the world because of copyright, but I’ve never done anything but show it to people for free…so I think I’m in the clear. The song is about regret as well, and I could think of a better ending/fit. “Baby alligators in the sewers grow up fast.”
