Last week I had the First Friday opening and critique for FIRE! All and all it was great to see my work moving in an upward direction. The numbers were a little low at the show on Friday, (thanks to all that came!) but between that, the classes that saw it, and the great crit on Wednesday, I got a great deal of exposure and good feedback. The good news is…
I was invited by the Saratoga Arts Festival to exhibit FIRE! this June (10th-13th) and kudos to the Fest for picking something out of the ordinary! I’ve never been around when Arts Fest goes down, but I look forward to checking it out this year!

After careful consideration and critique, I decided to modify the 4 Minute Warning series slightly and the clips below are the final works. (go to vimeo for the full vertical view.) I’m extremely happy with Paul Revere, but Red Coats only came out slightly better than the original. It’s funny how excited you can be when you first start something, but halfway through realize it’s not going to be a fully realized version of what was in your head. Failure…it’s what brings about change. Learning from your mistakes and not dwelling on them lead to discovery…so…thanks 4 Minute Warning for showing me what NOT to do in the future.
Like I said though…Paul Revere is a pretty solid piece…so not all is lost.
FIRE! is a “one night only show” of my latest video work. I’ll be showing it up at the Boor Sculpture Studio, on the SUNY Albany Campus, March 5th from 5-9PM. Hope you can all make it. BYOB/W/L…I’ll try and have some refreshments, but really…it’s not about the drinks…it’s about the work.;-) The work is mostly about pretending and fitting in…10 bucks to someone who can articulate it better…once they’ve seen it.
In other news, I went to the Restys record release party on Saturday and had the socks blown off my feet. Back in the summer I put together a show and had the Restys play. I ended up being inspired so much by the music it made its way into a video of the evening…it then eventually ended up in the People’s Pixel Project…it gets around. The new album is out now and it rocks. Not only because the band is great, but because Joel Patterson of Mountaintop Studios did their recording.
I met Joel back in the summer when he was walking around Troy Night Out recording the events. He interviewed me (14min mark) and got a bit of the Restys (48 min mark) Check it out below:
This Troy Night Out I will also have some work going up at the Best of 2009 photo show at the Photo Center of Troy, and a piece in the Collar Works show Off the Grid. That show is in the Cannon Building…7 Broadway. Come on out despite the weather and see some work!

Lots going on at the start of this new school semester/year. I recently sent out a ton of new work to folks around the globe and New York…we’ll see what happens…

In December I helped out a new friend, Zak Mulligan, with his first feature film “I’m Not Me” by donating my time and art work for a gallery scene in the film. Zach is off at Sundance for a film he shot, Obselidia…can’t wait to see both. Here is the trailer for both:
In other news…way back in Fall of 09 (Decades ago!) I submitted some video pieces to the Lake George Arts Project and their People’s Pixel Project. Well it looks like the Restys music video we all made back in July is one of their finalists. The screening is Saturday, February 6, 2010, 7 pm at Rock Hill Bakehouse Cafe, 19 Exchange Street, Glens Falls. And finally…a collection of my prints and work has gone on sale at Feast Gallery. Many of the prints are 1st editions of my stump work and environmental photography. They are being offered unframed in order to keep cost down for you and me. So if you’re around Toga, stop in and pick one up. The money will go towards my future efforts and the future efforts of Feast Gallery…a gem on Beekman.
So with a new year comes a new body of work. (Soon to be up on this site, and in shows.) I have spent a good two weeks rounding up work from 2009 and getting it ready to send out. I came across the short film “Us Ones In Between” (A Sunset Rubdown lyric) that me and the Falk’s made for a Troy group that never quite lifted off. It was shot at the very beginning of 2009 and took a good four months to finish. Overall I’m pretty happy with everything about it. The performances were good, but I can see how the story and editing take you out of the experience. When all is said and done it ended up being a place for me to try out some new ideas for the next feature. (coming soon) Special thanks to the Falk’s, Christian Grunnah, and Matt Caldamone for all the hard work…now off to festivals. Feedback is always welcomed!
John W. Yost is a filmmaker and multimedia artist from the Capital Region of Upstate New York. Since graduating with two degrees from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2004, John has been exhibiting and screening his extensive and varied portfolio across the country.
His work includes images from around the world, short films, and narrative features, including his 2007 debut feature film, EVERY GOOD THING to RUST and 2010 follow up, The Brave and the Kind. He is currently in post production on his third feature film, Orphaned, due out Spring 2012.
Often a hybrid of narrative and documentary, his work constantly seeks beauty, truth, and a greater understanding of the self. Stanley Kubrick, David Foster Wallace, Gus Van Sant, Omar Fast, and Radiohead headline his list of inspirations. John lives a modest and happy life with his wife, Raeanne, and their cat, Toonces.
